Another day, another record

Youngest Atlantic solo sailor sets sights on the world

Having become the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic single-handed at just 14 years old, Mike Perham, now 17, is currently embarking on a round-the-world sailing adventure, hoping to break a second record. With almost two years of preparation, the Hertfordshire youngster left Portsmouth Gunwharf Quays on Saturday 15th November last year.

Mike had intended to sail non-stop and unassisted, but unfortunate weather conditions and problems with equipment have caused him to dock in the Canary Islands, South Africa, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and most recently, Panama. He arrived in Panama to attend to yacht repairs and engine trouble, one of the many stops to lead him to set his sights on becoming the youngest person to sail around the world with assistance. The current record is held by 18 year old Australian David Dicks.

In honour of his sponsorship, Mike named his 50 foot open racing yacht ‘TotallyMoney.com'. Travelling further out to experience the raw nature of the sea, the sailor took a different route to Zac Sunderland, who has recently completed his voyage. The American became the youngest solo circumnavigator earlier this month, also aged 17. Beginning to sail at 7 years old, Mike’s other interests include windsurfing, skiing and canoeing. Studying for a National Diploma in Sports Performance, he is hoping to raise £1 for every mile sailed for ‘Save the Children’ and the ‘Tall Ships Youth Trust’.
