This year's opening of the Tour de France is being held in Monaco for the first time, and the principality is bracing itself for an influx of tourists.

Despite the doom and gloom of the credit crunch, Monaco has enjoyed a busy spell with tennis players Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray drawing record crowds for The Monte Carlo Rolex Masters – 124,000 spectators piled through the gates of the Monte Carlo Country Club during the clay-court ATP tournament – and it is expecting large numbers for the Formula One Grand Prix at the end of the month.

The presentation of the Tour de France cyclists will take place on July 2, with the first stage being tackled on July 4.
