Kayakers paddle uncharted water

Adventure Kayaking Team from Wales to paddle down Peruvian river

02.06.2009

A team of Welsh outdoor sports instructors are about to kayak down an uncharted river in Peru.

The expedition, “Below and Beyond Machu Picchu 09”, began with a three and a half day test run on the Rio Cotahuasi. The team will now join Peruvian guides in a five day trek to a currently undisclosed location in the jungle.

From there the team - Jon ‘Spike’ Green, Pete Catterall and Adam Harmer - will set off for an estimated six day kayaking expedition, armed with nothing but the supplies in their kayaks, two video cameras and the spirit of discovery.

It isn’t the undisclosed starting point or ending location (which are known only to the team members themselves) that are most intriguing about the trip — but rather what comes in between. All that the men know about the river is the overall gradient — just how that gradient is distributed will determine whether the kayakers will conquer it or themselves be conquered by the uncharted waters. Though each of the three instructors have 20+ years of adventure kayaking under their belts, the unpredictability of the river makes the Macchu Picchu expedition perhaps their most exciting to date.

The boys will carry with them two waterproof Predator XV adventure cameras — making it possible for them to capture the entire expedition on film. This video footage, as well as a series of articles and lectures, will follow the team’s expedition, providing thrill-seekers with a glimpse into the raw adventure of exploring these remote Peruvian waters.
