The 39th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship takes place tomorrow in the Bay of Buzios, Brazil.
The annual event is said to be the pinnacle of the youth sailing calendar, with past winners including Olympic medallists Robert Scheidt (BRA), Amelie Lux (GER), Ben Ainslie (GBR), Nick Rogers (GBR) and Siren Sundby (NOR).
Within hours of his victory in the Volvo Ocean Race as skipper of Ericsson 4, Brazilian sailor Torben Grael, hailed as the country's greatest-ever yachtsman, turned his attentions to the next generation of champion sailors. "I am delighted that the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship are taking place in my home country for the first time and feel sure Brazil ... will give a fantastic welcome to the next generation of Olympians, World Champions, Americas Cup and Volvo Ocean Race sailors," he said.
"My advice to these young sailors is to work hard, enjoy your sport, make the most of your potential and see where it takes you."
The International Sailing Federation assists young sailors with the development of their sailing careers whether they're focused on inshore Olympic dreams or the offshore challenges of the Volvo Ocean Race.
The event runs from July 9th to 17th.
