It’s a crisis we’ve all faced. Packing lightweight, it’s difficult to justify taking a lantern along with your head torch, right? It seems such a good idea, until you actually want to converse with your fellow campers. Cue dazzling blazes of LED light burning into your compadre’s retinas, swearing, and a spilt drink inside the tent. Gutted.

Mammut, already manufacturers of some excellent head torches like the Lucido T1, have circumvented the problem. Their Ambient Light is utterly simple: a white filter that clasps on to the head torch, turning it into a gentle, sociable lantern.

It does indeed cut out the most harsh rays from your LEDs, leaving you free to play cards, cook with friends, enjoy drinks or even a staring contest – with no eye damage. We tried this out several times: even in utter darkness the filter is a cinch to clip on to the torch and even stays on when you drop the whole lot.

Verdict

At just 28 grams, this is a great, lightweight solution for camping trips.
